Local island Ukulhas

Writer: The Kat's ApproachThe Kat's Approach

Ukulhas is a tiny, local island in the archipelago of Maldives. The island is not as touristy as other islands and I could not recommend it enough. It was my first visit to the Maldives, and I do not think I could have chosen better!

The island is known for being budget friendly. There is no resorts on the island, and the hotels are very limited. I think that's what makes it so special and why I enjoyed it so much.

It's especially good for people who want to see the Maldives and not only be in the resort. When we were there, we could see the locals living their life and it was life changing experience.

Being in so many big cities around the world, and coming to the Maldives after visiting Dubai was a breath of fresh air. It felt like the time stopped.

Locals would spend the time together, playing cards and talking.

We were staying at magical West Sands in Ukulhas. To our surprise, our room got upgraded for free and we got a room with a balcony! This has showed us the hospitality of Maldivian people, to only then realise that even more.

Our visit to Maldives was in August which is classified as 'off season'. There was not too many tourists and most of the restaurants have been shut down.

We only really eaten in one place for the whole duration of our trip. The food was good, and we became friends with the employees in this restaurant. We would go there 3 times a day, and every-time everyone was so nice to us!

The restaurant was in a hotel which is the tallest building in Ukulhas (5 floors), with a swimming pool at the rooftop. We have been shown the view from there by the employees. It was so nice and crazy at the same time, as you can see the whole island from above... this shows how small it is.

Walking from one end to another end of the island takes about 10 minutes.

Maldives is a muslim country, so there is no alcohol allowed on the entire island.

There is also no cars on island, except for the little carts that transport the tourists to and from the island.

This island is perfect for people who want to relax, re charge and enjoy the holidays without spending fortune.

The island is very clean, its known for having the best waste management system in the Maldives, there is literally no trash anywhere.

The beach is big enough for all tourists, however, there is a coral reef, so I highly recommend bringing shoes for swimming. We did not bring ours, and I ended up with many bruises.

What makes this island so special is the locals. They were the nicest people I have ever met. They work very hard (people from the restaurant told us that they work 12 hours 7 days a week) and yet, they are kind, happy, and very grateful for everything.

Love,

Kat
